March 24

"...The life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God..." 1 Samuel 25:29 RSV. "Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn" Matthew 13:30 NIV.

"The bundle of the living is the precious package of those for whom the Lord cares." Oxford Annotated Bible, p.366.
We slip out of the bundle when we insist on going our own way. Our self assertion pokes a needle through the seal of love God has so carefully wrapped around us; finally and slowly, out seeps the preserving fluid of God's Living Water. We can't understand why we are in a dry land of self and left to face the world alone.

Life is always bound in bundles, starting with the family. There is no island, physical or spiritual or mental, where we can isolate our "self," much as we wish it at times. God has declared that man shall not live alone (Genesis 2:18). Our growth depends on and is proved by our ability to bundle with to get along with others. Every person who touches our day becomes bound with us and we with them. It's a grand concept that should help us to interact with loving concern for all.

We are bound in bundles with all who have come before us, too, for we share in their genes and their ideas. Every time we read a great book, we are bound with the author. We are bound to the past and bound to respect the past, as well. If not, we are indeed doomed to repeat the mistakes that have caused weeds of war and wrong to proliferate through this poor, sad world.

O Father, help us to remember that we are your precious possession, wrapped in Your bundle that we may not be lost!

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions

Spurgeon's Morning for March 24

Spurgeon's Evening for March 24

"In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit."

-  Luke 10:21

"He was heard in that he feared."

-  Hebrews 5:7

The Saviour was "a man of sorrows," but every thoughtful mind has discovered the fact that down deep in his innermost soul he carried an inexhaustible treasury of refined and heavenly joy. Of all the human race, there was never a man who had a deeper, purer, or more abiding peace than our Lord Jesus Christ.

Son of Mary, see there thy brother James, see there thy loved disciple John, and thy bold apostle Peter, how the cowards sleep when thou art in thy sufferings! Lo! Thou hast no friend left in heaven or earth.

"Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?"

-  Luke 22:48

"The Son of man."

-  John 3:13

The kisses of an enemy are deceitful." Let me be on my guard when the world puts on a loving face, for it will, if possible, betray me as it did my Master, with a kiss.

How constantly our Master used the title, the "Son of man!" If he had chosen, he might always have spoken of himself as the Son of God, the Everlasting Father, the Wonderful, the Counselor, the Prince of Peace; but behold the lowliness of Jesus! He prefers to call himself the Son of man.

TWO DAYS

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is Yesterday with all its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains.

Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday.

We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said.
Yesterday is gone forever.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with all its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and its poor performance; Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.

Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet to be born.

This leaves only one day, Today.
Any person can fight the battle of just one day.
It is when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down.

It is not the experience of Today that drives a person mad, it is the remorse or bitterness of something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.

Let us, therefore, Live but one day at a time.

Find Out What Pleases the Lord

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

1 John 5:14-15 (NKJ)

What a beautiful walk God intends for us! Little glimpses we see only affirm God wants the joys of the closest possible relationship with us ... pure and keen.

"Ask anything according to His will..." (1 Jn 5:14) How are we to understand "will" here? Actually it is what God desires, delights in, wishes, what gives Him pleasure as opposed to the word that means we must unearth a predetermined course, a deliberate design or the asking is all in vain. No, it appears we cannot miss if we know what pleases the Lord. It is to our benefit to find out what pleases our God!

What freedom a close walk with God offers, basking in His pleasures, and then reaching out with prayers for the things that we've learned will please Him. We are offered the assurance of prayers that will be heard AND requests granted (1 Jn 5:15).

Let us be loosened. Practically speaking, we can be overwhelmed in prayers of kindliness for others, to see God's acts of pleasure to help our fellowman. Growing in this...what a joy to know the pleasure of kindliness will issue together with the pleasure of His very creative
design!
