GOLDEN WORDS

Before I was afflicted I went astray but now I obey your word.

Luke 6:31 NIV

It is a terrible truth that many of us go astray until we are afflicted; we conceive in our pride that "we shall not be moved, and in this stage we dislike and radically disagree with the sterner presentations of God in the Bible, and it is only by the sharp sword of affliction and the profound conviction of the meanness of our pride that we are brought to see God for ourselves and are ready to turn and obey His commands.

"As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success." 2 Chronicles 26:5.

In the February 1983 issue of Spiritual Fitness in Business, Kerby Anderson gives the following traits of successful people:

1.Successful people are dependent. They depend on the Lord to use their gifts in specific situations.

2.Successful people are less concerned with image than with accomplishment. God gets the glory. So many believe they must live up to a preconceived image of the "successful businessman." We are successful by being successful, not by living up to an image concocted by advertising executives.

3.Successful people are tenacious; they don't give up when an obstacle presents itself; they aren't vulnerable to criticism. They pray that the Lord will give the vision, stamina and perseverance to complete the projects before them.

4.Successful people focus on the goal, not the reward. They are winners, achievers and contributors. They strive toward the goal and leave the results to God.

5.Successful people do not accept all the credit. They realize almost every project requires more than one's personal effortstaff support. A successful person give credit where credit is due. Romans 16:14.

6.Successful people redeem failures. Failure can indeed be an avenue to success. Who hasn't failed? Only oneJesus Christ. If we place our trust in Him, we will be able to redeem failures into successes.

"God is not so unjust as to forget your work..." Hebrews 6:10. The discouraged need to know that God observes good works, and that what the world considers success is not always that.

"But now is Christ risen from the dead."

-  1 Corinthians 15:20

"The only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."

- John 1:14

The divinity of Christ finds its surest proof in his resurrection, since he was "Declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead." It would not be unreasonable to doubt his Deity if he had not risen.

He hath turned for me my mourning into laughter, and my desolation into joy; he hath led my captivity captive, and made my heart rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Let others think as they will of him, to me he must be the only begotten of the Father: blessed be his name.

Demonstrating

by Cathy Vinson

"He now showed them the full extent of His love"

(John 13:1b)

In the account of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples (Jn 13:1-17), He demonstrated to them the full extent of His love. From the heart of a loving teacher, came the following thoughts from this text:

Why did He do it? His heart would be breaking in the midst of such service. He would be ministering to the one who would betray Him.(?)

1. Their feet were dirty. The common, familiar, daily human need. Jesus ministers to what is daily. He knows what is the accumulation at the day's end. Dirt and sludge can occur in ministry and service.

2. He could do something about it. Sometimes the need awaits action and doing. Can we do something about it? He did.

3. He did not have an obligation. Under no obligation, He did not have to. People can wash their own feet! He did it solely out of love for them.

4. He went above and beyond duty in order to serve them voluntarily in love. That is where the blessing begins. As He went beyond what was required and did it voluntarily, they could taste of the ministry and love of Jesus. This is the wonderful kind of Lord He is!

5. Lesson: "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them" (Jn 13:17). We may have yet to taste of the happiness Jesus here speaks. He is waiting to bless those that will replicate His kind of love and service.

Let us get beyond obligation and enter into the beautiful ministry of our Lord.
