Golden Words

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

Doing things by halves is worthless. It may be the other half that counts.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault" (James 1:5).

Prayer does not change the mind of God but it does open the way to our heart so we will understand what God has in mind for us. This, too, is wisdom. What is so striking about this verse is that God does not reproach us for what we ask; He gives liberally if we ask for what is good for all concerned. "Give me wisdom and knowledge...`Because you...did not ask for riches, wealth or honor...nor have you even asked for long life...wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you'" (2 Chronicles 1:1012 NAS).

"There were also with him other little ships."

- Mark 4:36

"I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin."

- Psalm 32:5

It is well to sail with Jesus, even though it be in a little ship. When we sail in Christ’s company, we may not make sure of fair weather, for great storms may toss the vessel which carries the Lord himself, and we must not expect to find the sea less boisterous around our little boat.

See the value of a grace-wrought confession of sin! It is to be prized above all price, for in every case where there is a genuine, gracious confession, mercy is freely given, not because the repentance and confession deserve mercy, but for Christ’s sake.

Write Protected

by Pat Nordman

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh"

(Ezekiel 36:26 NIV)

"You show that you are a letter from Christ. . .written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts"

(2 Corinthians 3:3)

Christ has written with sacred blood right across our hard hearts, "Forgiven!" We are "write-protected," to use a computer term. No one else can come along and overwrite that blessed word, "Forgiven." "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more" Isaiah 43:25. O! how grateful we are for this gift!

Once absolved, we become living messages and take on the new responsibility of being legible and intelligible. Letters are written to be read and understood. We don't want to misrepresent our Lord by a wavering and unsteady script that sends an inaccurate meaning.

A written epistle is permanent; for that reason, we especially want it to be understood. 1) Omissions can change the intention of the writer; the lack of a certain grace which is a mark of a Christian can cause a fateful translation not intended by the writer. 2) Indistinctness, where a word can be misinterpreted, can alter purposes; "How long will [we] waver between two opinions?" 1 Kings 19:21. 3) Worst of all are unsightly blots that stand out so conspicuously as to cause us to be of no effect at all: "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice" Ephesians 4:31.

Jesus has blotted out our transgressions for His sake and ours; let us not blot out His goodness and mercy to others by misrepresenting Him as His epistles for others!

~ Destiny in the Slumss ~

In More than You and Me, Kevin and Karen Miller write of the power of a God-given vision:

One couple lived in London 130 years ago. For the first 10 years of their marriage, William Booth, especially, was in a quandary: What was God calling him to do?

Then his wife, Catherine, a skillful Bible teacher, was invited to preach in London. While they were there, William took a late-night walk through the slums of London's East End. Every fifth building was a pub. Most had steps at the counter so little children could climb up and order gin. That night he told Catherine, "I seemed to hear a voice sounding in my ears, 'Where can you go and find such heathen as these, and where is there so great a need for your labors?' Darling, I have found my destiny!"

Later that year, 1865, the couple opened the "Christian Mission" in London's slums. Their life vision: to reach the "down and outers" that other Christians ignored. That simple vision of two people grew into the Salvation Army, which now ministers through 3 million members in 91 countries.

It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.     Mark 13:34
