DECEMBER 19

GOLDEN WORDS

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 NLT

This story is told of Daniel Webster when he was in the prime of his manhood. He was dining with a company of literary men in Boston. During the dinner the conversation turned upon the subject of Christianity. Mr. Webster frankly stated his belief in the divinity of Christ and his dependence upon the atonement of the Savior.
One said to him, “Mr. Webster, can you comprehend how Christ could be both God and man? Mr. Webster promptly replied, “No, sir, I cannot comprehend it. If I could comprehend him, he would be no greater than myself. I feel that I need a super-human Savior.”

December 19

"But if it dies, it produces many seeds" (John 12:24). If the corn of wheat is kept in the granary it is dormant. This could be applied to our getting busy with life, too. To "die" may mean to sacrifice time, self and goods to a higher end, to a noble cause; to regard the higher end as more valuable and more important than our own plans; to lose self in the object to which we are consecrated. We bring forth much fruit through loss of self.

"Whoever finds his life will lose it" (Matthew 10:39) in service for his or her Master, for it is what-ever or whoever masters us that determines what we do with our life.

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions

Spurgeon's Morning for December 19

Spurgeon's Evening for December 19

"The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord."

- Proverbs 16:33

"And there was no more sea."

- Revelation 21:1

If you would "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness," all things would then be added unto you. You are meddling with Christ’s business, and neglecting your own when you fret about your lot and circumstances. The sea of glass glows with a glory unbroken by a wave. No tempest howls along the peaceful shores of paradise. Soon shall we reach that happy land where partings, and changes, and storms shall be ended! Jesus will waft us there. Are we in him or not? This is the grand question.

It's Almost Jesus' Birthday

It's almost Jesus' birthday... so let us not forget.
To give to him the present, that he would like the best.
He doesn't want a stocking...hung upon the tree.
Or lots of toys or presents, like selfish you and me.

He only wants our love for him, to shine out to the earth.
He wants us to tell others, about his miracle birth.
He wants us to bring all we know, to church to worship him.
He wants us to remember...he died for all our sins.

Please focus on his birthday...the sacrifice God made.
To send his Son to live and die, so we could all be saved.
This tiny baby Jesus...born in a lowly stall.
He came to bring salvation...to save us one and all.

This Christmas has more meaning...I'm calm and have such peace.
So let us bow before him, and worship at his feet.
The church bells now are ringing, for you and me to bring...
Our gifts of praise and worship...to our Savior and our King.

The Seamless Garment

by Pat Nordman

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me...He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted...To comfort all who mourn... To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness..."

Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:17-18 NKJ

This is one of the most treasured passages in the entire Bible. If we had not one other verse in the Book, this one would suffice to tell us that we have a Daysman for our night.

1) God will give us beauty for ashes, radiance after the ashes of the volcanic eruption of our life! It's well known that acreage is renewed after fields and forests are blackened. Beauty indeed appears after the ashes. Crumbling lava and volcanic ash make the most fertile soil. So God grants us enrichment after we are consumed by a fire that we fear will destroy us. "He lifts [us] from the dust–from a pile of ashes-..." 1 Samuel 2:3 TLB.

2) God will give us the oil of joy for mourn-ing. Jesus often went to the Mount of Olives to pray. I've thought about Jesus' agony that night being the Oil pressed out, and this being our oil of joy. The Garden experience that night was horrendous: "...Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with vehement cries and tears..." (Hebrews 5:7.) We need not be ashamed of our tears; our dear Jesus wept several times.

3) God will give us the garment of praise for our spirit of heaviness. We are to wrap our-selves in praise. It is will, not feeling. The feeling comes after we have obeyed and praised, in spite of! Job said, "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

"This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom." John 19:23. In Jesus’ time great sorrow was indicated by tearing the garment, but this particular garb was left whole. Is this our garment of praise, praise that Jesus comforts and saves us? Come, let us wrap Jesus' seamless garment around us!
