We have a dear friend named Colleen who takes in all the homeless, lost, or stray animals in the neighborhood. She is so kind and loving that she rescues all the baby birds that have fallen out of their nests, or the little stray kittens who have no food or shelter.
Colleen gave us our first cat, Chatty. Chatty was a talkative calico cat who used to roam the streets with her brother, One-Eye, until One-Eye got runover by a car. Colleen saved Chatty and brought her to our house where she would be safe.
Chatty stayed with us for several years. She was so chubby and cuddly! She enjoyed lying in the warm sunshine. She loved to tell us stories with her endless, "Meow-Meow-Meow." She lived a pleasant, comfortable life until one day the tree-trimmers came with their large, noisy saws. The noise scared Chatty away, and we never found her again.
We were heartbroken! We searched everywhere and checked at the Humane Society to see if anyone found her. We still don't know what ever happened to Chatty. We still miss her "Meow-Meow-Meow."
After Chatty disappeared our friend Colleen found another cat who needed a home. Mari was very thin when Colleen rescued her. Mari was out in the wild, living on bugs like Simba and his friends on The Lion King. Now Mari is plump and content, but she is still quite adept at catching bugs!
Before Mari came to live with us, she spent a few days living with another family. They loved her dearly, and would have kept her, but couldn't because someone was allergic to cats. One of the little girls in that family had the amazing ability to communicate with animals! She said that the kitten liked to be called "Priss." When Priss came to live with us Elise added Mari to her name because the little gray kitten had black stripes in the shape of an "M" on her forehead. So her full name is Mari-Priss, but sometimes we call her Mari for short.
Mari has an odd habit of meowing, purring, and rubbing against us just before she eats. We thought this was her way of asking us to feed her, but she does it even if her bowl is already filled with food. Maybe she is just showing her gratitude and saying Grace before she eats.
