E-mail Standards:

Open and Read Messages


The participant will learn how to open and read a message.

Time Frame: 1 Hour

Materials: Handouts, Addresses, Paper

Equipment Needed: Computers, Printers, Internet


Activity: Retrieve and read a message.

Step 1: Start your Internet browser.

Step 2: Ask the adult-learner to access the hotmail site. In the address window, type www.hotmail.com.

Step 3:Ask the learner to login with her or her login name. Type the password and click enter.

Step 4: Ask the learner to click the In- Box on the left hand side of the screen.

Step 5: Ask the learner to retrieve the message you just wrote to yourself.

Step 6:Ask the learner to double-click on the message that was written by him or her and read the message.

* Tell learner unread messages will have a red indicator by each new unread message.

* Tell learner to note the header information. It will tell you who the information from, when the message was sent, the subject and size of the message.

Next Activity: Exchange e-mail addresses with classmates.

Step 7: Compose and send messages to your classmates. (Approx. 15 minutes)

Step 8: Practice retrieving and reading these messages.

* Tell learner to go to remember to go to In-box to retrieve messages.

* Tell learner you can respond to a message by clicking the Reply. This will automatically fill in the To box and make a copy in response of the message you received.

* Tell learner to remember to click Send to send a message.

* Remember to click OK to accept confirmation that the message has been sent.

Have fun with composing and sending e-mail messages.
