Brockway, Connie - ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT (Dell - 1997) (4+) I found this to be a wonderfully written, compelling read—just what I expect from Connie Brockway. The characters are wonderfully drawn with clear motivations; something I need to make a book work for me, especially when the characters are as complicated as Jack and Anne. ~Anne H. Brockway, Connie - AS YOU DESIRE (Dell - 1997) (4) I was put off by this book at first because it's set in Egypt. No matter, the hero and heroine are well written, and their story and the history they have together is very compelling. Brockway has created a sensitive and strong hero. ~Cindy (cindyzot@aol.com)
Brockway, Connie - AS YOU DESIRE (Dell - 1997) (5) I never buy books. I think it's a waste of money when the public library is always available nearby. However, after I read AS YOU DESIRE through the library, I went straight to the bookstore and bought myself a copy. It's a keeper—funny, tender, poignant, and sexy! The perfect romance. I fell in love with Harry and Desdemona—both are flawed, smart and sassy. It is set in Egypt, but thankfully does not have any harems or sultans. The setting only adds to the vivid imagery of the book. You can feel the mysticism and the sultry atmosphere. I've read the book ten times already and it still makes me smile. Trust me and READ this book. You'll fall head-over-heels, too! ~Divya C. (dchatur@unity.ncsu.edu)

Brockway, Connie - McCLAIREN'S ISLE: THE PASSIONATE ONE One day he receives a missive from his father requesting his services. He is to travel to Fair Badden to fetch Lord Carr's ward, Rhiannon Russell, and deliver her to the Merrick home on McClairen's Isle, the castle known as Wanton's Blush. Ash believes his father only wants Rhiannon for his fourth wife, but because he needs the money to ransom his brother Raine from a French prison, he sets off to do his father's bidding. After arriving in Fair Badden, however, the young woman informs him that she will not accompany him to Wanton's Blush as she will soon be married. Although Ash won't receive payment now, he is greatly relieved as he had feared Rhiannon would die after he delivered her to Scotland—just like the first three Carr brides. While waiting for Rhiannon's wedding day to arrive, Ash spends a great deal of time in her company and reluctantly begins to fall in love. But he knows he's not the man for her—he is no one and he has nothing. All he can give her is misery. Rhiannon is an orphan who has horrific memories of the Battle of Culloden, the reprisals following it, and her escape to Fair Badden where she was raised by Lady Edith Fraiser and her husband. She has made a great match with the younger son of a local lord, although she doesn't know why he chose her, and she is very happy with her lot—until Ash Merrick comes into her life. Rhiannon is attracted to him, even to his dark side, but she knows she must stay at Fair Badden and not be tempted by this man. In the days to follow, however, two attempts are made on her life, which have her questioning this decision. Why is her life in danger now, and who would benefit from her death? Connie Brockway has written a riveting, gothic-toned romance that will have readers quickly turning the pages. McCLAIREN'S ISLE: THE PASSIONATE ONE is the first book in a trilogy about the Merrick siblings: Ash, Raine, and Fia; and I was hooked after reading just the prologue. This mysterious, intricately woven story takes place in England and the brooding land of Scotland, and all the characters are so realistic that the evil and darkness surrounding them is felt immediately. The only drawback about this book is knowing I will have to wait until next year for Raine's story. I highly recommend reading McCLAIREN'S ISLE: THE PASSIONATE ONE if you love a dark, downtrodden hero who is redeemed by the passion of a strong and loving woman. ~Sharon Laird for Bookbug on the Web
Brockway, Connie - MY DEAREST ENEMY (Dell - 1998) (4) Interesting main characters with witty verbal and written exchanges between them, strong sexual tension, and interesting background detail about women's rights in late Victorian times all combine for a highly readable historical romance. ~Elena P.
Brown, Lisa G. - BILLY BOB WALKER GOT MARRIED (Harper) (5) I loved it. A very realistic book about the need to respect the one you love. ~Carrol J. (pjordan@dsuper.net)
Brown, Lisa G. - SLEEPING AT THE MAGNOLIA (Harper - 1997) (Very Highly Recommended) The hero and heroine meet when they are young. After he saves her from drowning in the creek, they become friends. She and her parents run a country inn, The Magnolia Inn, and he works in the tobacco fields owned by his wealthy grandfather. However, the hero doesn't know he is his grandfather. The heroine's father is violently opposed to her friendship with the shanty-town boy, yet their friendship develops into love. They plan to elope, but they are discovered by her father and his grandfather. Then tragedy strikes and her love turns to hate. The hero is banished from the Magnolia and leaves the area for three years. When he returns, he boldly enters the inn. The tension is high and the reader senses there is more to the story than meets the eye... Brown is a powerful writer who understands suspense and how to write it. ~Beth C.
