Lynn Kurland - Kristen Kyle

Kurland, Lynn - THIS IS ALL I ASK  (Jove - 1997) (5)
I was really taken with this book. It features a blind hero, and the author doesn't take the easy way out and have a "miracle cure" as a fix-all. Instead, we get to feel the hero's vulnerability and uncertainty as he falls in love with a wonderful woman he can't see. He's afraid she'll pity him. She's afraid he'll find out she's plain. It's a terrific emotional read, one of the best I've read this year. ~Cathy S. (plover12@cris.com)

Kurland, Lynn - THIS IS ALL I ASK  (Jove - 1997) (4+)
When her abusive father sells her off to a man she's heard "has horns and practices the Dark Arts," our heroine is understandably scared out of her wits, but she is also relieved to escape her sire's abuse. Instead of finding the Devil, she finds a wounded, proud and wonderful man. A man who needs her love to become whole again—her soulmate. This is a beautiful love story about the magical healing powers of love. Kurland infuses her writing with a tender and often times humorous touch. Although the story lacks an explicit love scene (my only complaint!), it packs a powerful emotional punch. Fans of well-written medieval tales should not miss this book. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it again!  ~Laurie S. (shallah@empire.net)

Kyle, Kristen - LAST WARRIOR, THE  (Bantam - 5/99) (3)
Captain Jack Talbert is a disgraced Samurai Warrior who stubbornly clings to the traditions of his adopted homeland, and he is desperately searching for the means to redeem himself. The much-talked-about Warrior is a legend among the people who frequent the San Francisco waterfront because of his skills in karate and iaijutsu. He is also schooled in the ways of Japanese culture and the perfect man to help Meghan McLowry.

Desperate to obtain the services of Jack Talbert, whom she wants as a bodyguard for her father, Meghan braves the sacred walls of an Asian bathhouse. Shocked to the core at the sight of the strikingly attractive man rising to the surface from a tub of steamy hot water, she only hesitates a moment before revealing exactly what it is she wants from him. When Jack refuses Meghan's offer, she threatens to have his ship searched and his cargo confiscated for opium smuggling. Blackmail does not sit well with our hero and he again refuses, but Meghan is a strong-willed woman who has something else that will entice the Captain to accept her proposal. Though Jake and Meghan form a shaky alliance, that rapidly turns into something more, both are secretly being maneuvered by evil forces working to destroy them.

THE LAST WARRIOR is a departure from the standard historical romance. Kristen Kyle delves into the Japanese culture and explores the samurai tradition to its fullest. She forges into the mysteries surrounding Warrior preparation and takes the reader on a journey into the infamous opium dens. THE LAST WARRIOR is a sensual love story, coated with betrayal and revenge, and rich in the atmosphere of early San Francisco—an intriguing story for those who crave a change of pace. ~Olivia Holton for Bookbug on the Web

Kyle, Kristen - NIGHTHAWK  (Leisure - 1997) (5)
How delighted I was to find a story with such a successful merge between science fiction and romance. As science fiction, NIGHTHAWK was convincing; as a romance, it was a joy to read. Just my kind of book. ~Pernille (keeper@post8.tele.dk)
