After Ron got his orders to Germany and came back from Thailand, we sat down and talked and decided that we really didn't care if we came back to the States broke, we were going to travel and buy things. (We did almost come back broke!)
We were stationed in Wiesbaden Germany, a community that's been there since the Roman occupation. It's about as close to the center of Europe as you can get, so the possibilities for travel were endless. And we took full advantage of it.
We were close enough to the French border that we could go shopping there on Saturdays, and frequently did. The city of Metz is a fair sized town, and is just across the border. That's where we did most of our shopping.
Places like The Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland were nice for a long weekend.
We saved leave time and money for longer trips. So Spain, Italy, and two trips to Paris were on our itinerary.
Ron had a job whereby he performed lots of Temporary Duty (TDY). This enabled him to "scout an area out" before we took a family vacation there. So at least one of us was somewhat familiar with the "lay of the land". Fortunately for him but unfortunately for the rest of us, his travels took him to a couple of places distance and time didn't permit us to go. Greece and England are examples.
Of course two big events happened when we were in Europe - the births of Marc and Renee. Our only regret was that they were too small to remember any of our fabulous time in Europe.
Amid all of this there was time for Ron to pick up a Masters Degree, for Judy to get over a years credit at the University of Maryland, and for Ron Sr and Ron Jr (and Marc at the end) to participate in many Volksmarches (organised walks) all over Germany including one by torchlight at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on a New Year's Eve.
Actually even Stateside we haven't done too badly as far as travelling goes. Since we've been married, we've lived in California, Illinois, West Virgina, New York, North Dakota and Arizona. And on top of that there have been frequent trips to California and Washington where Renee as well as Marc and his wife Des live.
We hope soon to have pictures on this site, so we can show everybody a personal glimpse into our travels.
In the meantime, you'll find throughout the site, links to places we've been. We invite you to share our travels with us albeit vicariously.
We also invite any comments or suggestions for improvement of the site you may have. You can E-Mail any of us, or make comments in our various guestbooks.
