I was the head coach of this team for ten years. This is the finest group of young men it has ever been my pleasure to know. I feel privileged to have been a part of their lives.
Ronald J. Springer Sr.,Head Coach.
Over the years I've had several Assistant Coaches whose aid has been invaluable. Here are some of them:
Charlie Eckert
Rick Etter
Don Solomon
In September of 1982 a Junior Olympic Rifle Camp was held at Black Canyon (Ben Avery) Shooting Range.A small group of parents felt the need for a junior shooting club in that area. Thus the club known as The Mavericks was founded.
Originally the parents were filled with good intentions and little else. Soon however, some of the parents attended Certified Instructor School, some Class C Coaches School, and one went on the be the first Class B Rifle Coach in the State of Arizona.
With trained coaches and instructors, the shooters began to achieve. Many made Expert. A Few made Distinguised Expert. Some went on to win State, Sectional and National Championships.
The club sponsored seven Junior Olympic Shooting Camps.
I believe our highest achievement was to win the National Sub Junior Prone Postal Match. We were the only team to shoot it outdoors, and we did so in the dead of winter!
The Club was always closely associated with Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America. For many years we shot on their range at South Mountain. In 1993, the Council changed its orientation and decided that they didn't want an every Saturday shooting program. Further, they decided that they didn't want to have a competitive shooting team associated with them.
Essentially that meant the end of the Mavericks.
Some of those kids from the early days are grown, married, and have children of their own. It is my fond hope that they will tell their children about the fun and excitement they had as competitive shooters. Perhaps in that generation is another series of champions.
