Competitions

No rules were published in the issue of New Hedeby that served as the Convention booklet. I've lifted these from the promo that was circulated some months before the Conference.

There will be several new competitions introduced this year. We will be holding a Brewing competition for all those interested in the goodly craft of home brewing. There will also be competitions in Armouring, Weapon making and Costuming. An invitation to enter these competitions is extended to all Conference attendees. Items which are entered in a competition must be solely produced by the entrant and be of good appearance, authentically reproduced and have a practical value. A trebuchet construction competition, from supplied materials, will also be held.

The archery copmetition was at a fixed target near the dam, and a roving competition up on the hill where a number of arrows were shattered. Martin Baker collected the stubby ends for use with his impressive "King's Guide".

There was also a bow vs. Musket competition run as a time trial over five minutes. Most of the archers ran out of arrows before the muskets had got off their third shot. After running out in 1985, I bought 72 arrows (and still ran out). The muskets were double balled, the count of ball and arrow hits was about the same but the gunners went for a lot longer than the archers who all ran out. I'd love to do this competition again, but would need to cut the time to two or three minutes and make sure everyone had enough arrows.
