Para Kay Kiko
by Cynthia Cuayo-Juico, M.D.
Kiko is the school's pet name for Francis Xavier. Para Kay Kiko is translate in English as Dedicated to Francis, is now on its third year this summer of '92. It was created by the Campus Minter's Office in 1989. It has been funded from the proceeds of the annual School Fair, or from the Student Council's various fund raising programs like the movie premiere of "The Awakening" or through the in-house/in-school activities like the Musicfest, High School Dance or the Freshman Acquaintance Party, etc.Para Kay Kiko was spearheaded by the Student Council members. Last summer, they organized it once again like a real summer school with Jeremy Sy as Principal; Subil Go as Department Head for math; Joseph Sia, DH for Science; and Joseph de Leon, DH for English. Twenty-six sterling high school student-teachers formed the faculty department of Para Kay Kiko summer course. From May 5 to June 5, 1991, around fifty grade school graduates from several public schools in san Juan were invited to attend Para Kay Kiko. Their classrooms were the 4th floor of the high school building. The five public schools involved each sent their top ten graduates to XS. Ove all the majority of the top-notchers were girls.
Para Kay Kiko lesson plans were approved by several HS faculty members, namely, Mrs. Luisa Relatado for English, Ms. Leonides Marques for Science and Ms. Irene San Andres for Math. The English language subject proved difficult for the public school graduates. The Math Department Head was impressed by the dignity of the public schoolers. Their white T-shirts, long pants and rubber shoes for boys, and white T-shirts, long blue skirts and shoes for the girls attending XS, may as well be the same clothes worn by Xavierians attending Summer Academic Assistance classes. During the first graduation rites for the summer course, the graduates came in their best attire, and their parents came dressed up fit for a Malacanana official affair."
Para Kay Kiko dreams of being able to offer scholarships to poor but deserving student coming to high school. This will depend on the continued support and funding from the Xavier parents and the school administration's encouragement of the various student affairs at XS organized for the purpose.
Aren't we luck Papa?... Chino is in Nursery in Xavier School!"Having spent an hour with Jeremy U. Sy and Joseph de Leon of "Para Kay Kiko", that's the best conclusion a parent can confess. The interview is an experience in itself. Knowing nothing, (mail with 64 Xavier School, July '91 issue came one week later), we started with "What is 'Para Kay Kiko'". It is an outreach program of our students, now foing on its third year, held in Xavier School during summer funded by the proceeds of the Students' Fair. Twenty-six Xavier high school students organized this summer's refresher course for forty-four grade school graduates from five public schools around Xavier School. Its purpose is to prepare them better for high school education.
Jeremy and Joseph, together with the rest of the "teachers", believed that there is a need to share, to open onself, to make a statement: that one doesn't live alone. It is this consciousness that leads them to sacrifice time for planning, actual implementation and evaluation of the experience. It is the willingness to help that gives them the inspiration. They don't consider it a sacrifice because their "students" also share their experience with them as their "teachers".Out boys know the limitations of the program: among the organizers, only a handful become committed. Perhaps we, as parents, should be remotivated to encourage our boys in this commendable task.
As a whole "Para Kay Kiko is a self-fulfillment not only for Xavier boys but their teachers, their parents and the school as well.
Congratulations!
"Aren't we luck, Papa?"
