In the evening time when things are quiet and the
earth more peaceful,
it is as if the earth has taken a breath, has
slowed down its rhythm
and, in essence, it has done so. The earth has
much to teach, much to
show, much to give. The rhythm change that
comes with each evening is
one that we can imitate with our own earthly
bodies. It is a time when
the breath of life should slow and calm down and
become more even in its
expiration and inhalation.

We are so seldom ever conscious of our breathing
unless it is inhibited
in some way. If we have allergies or physical
conditions that impede,
then we are consciously aware of how much air we
are able to take in and
out. If our environment is such that there are
clouds of pollution that
affect us, we become even more aware of our
breathing. It is the loss
of breathing that makes us aware. How much
better it would be to
become aware of the value of the breath. We take
it for granted unless
an accident or experience has changed our regular
day to day habitual
breathing, yet we have a tool that can be more
than a means for staying
alive.

Breathing slowly is calming. It is calming for
the body and it is
calming for the spirit. Those who involve
themselves in Yoga know the
benefits of proper breathing. Singers understand
its importance. We all
can use our breath to change the rhythm of the
body, the rhythm of the
heartbeat and experience a refreshing shift in
the rhythm of the soul.
All is not rush and hurry. Taking time to
breathe properly and be aware
of our breath is also a meditative tool and a
contemplative tool. It,
in effect, gives us space to travel within. It
can relieve anxiety and
give momentary 'rests' to the mind. To
continually go at a speed which
doesn't allow for calmness is to see the breath
become more shallow and
less energizing. Not only is being aware of your
breath good for your
health, but it is good for your growth in
awareness. Here is a gift
that is given us at birth. We need to use it
wisely.
