Section 4 LORE

Correspondences

We have talked a lot about symbols, but why are we actually concerned with symbols and their meanings? It has to do with states of consciousness and the universe in general. The Universe is an amazing place, dancing with energy and pattern, so much so that our ordinary everyday consciousness shields us from perceiving a vast quantity of what is actually around us. This is necessary to function. If the filters were dropped and we actually perceived or recognized ALL the intricacies and interplays that were occuring around us even in so simple a matter as reading this lecture we would be overwhelmed and unable to continue. Consider, as you sit in your chair, you are minimally aware of temperature and light, of air flow and the relative comfort of your body and you recognize background noises, but are currently ignoring them because you are concentrating on reading. Now expand for a moment and try to think about everything. The texture of the keys, the play of light and shadow on the keyboard and your hands, the smells around you, the sounds you "fail" to hear..hum of the computer, hum of power in your house, the ticking of clocks, the whisper of your breath, your own heartbeat. Now consider the things you know are there but that your senses can't perceive directly. The particles of air around you, the pressure of them, dust particles and the tiny creatures that dwell on them, ambient infrared and ultraviolet radiation, radio and televison waves, bacteria, the motion of the planet, the motion of the solar system, of the galaxy. Now think small, really small. The solid surface you are sitting on composed of vibrating atoms, whirling and moving in their own patterns, and between electrons, protons and neutrons, mostly empty space. As you think about the "ordinary" act of sitting at your computer and reading, you should begin to see what I mean, we are surrounded by infinite complexity and diversity operating in complex patterns, a whirling dance of energy and motion in continual flux. All of this is part of the Goddess and God, there is divinity in every particle every motion. The Universe is contained in every particle and every particle is contained in the Universe. We and everything else is part of the Mind of the Goddess, the infinitely complex process that goes on all around us all the time.

Our ordinary consciousness then does not function to let information in, but rather to keep most information out, selectively eliminating and choosing only those things that are immediately relevent to what we are doing. However we have another type of consciousness that does not filter or limit input. It has been called dream consciousness, or the subconscious or spirit consciousness. It is functional when we dream, and it is this consciousness that is capable of perceiving the magickal and divine around us. It is this state of consciousness we must tap into and achieve in order to perform magick, to perform divination, to heal and channel, to effect changes and miracles; and the way our normal consciousness communicates with our dream consciousness is through the medium of symbols.

In later lectures we will delve into how to change our consciousness at will through meditation and trance, but for now let us continue with learning the symbols, the abc's of magick.

The planetary influences (astrological) are a major symbol group and most everything else can be related to them and classified through them.
