Letters to Moonchild

October 14 1998 Merry meet Moonchild, A qualified yes, we can summon spirits to aid us. Spirits are beings of a higher plane than us and in some ways are a little beyond our understanding. There are multitudes of different spirit beings that inhabit the Universe and knowing which are helpful and harmless can be tricky. It gets even worse as, there are some that appear to be one kind, but are actually another more dangerous sort. And yes there is definite danger in contacting spirits. If you as a summoner are not sufficiently well schooled in shielding, or are not perfectly balanced mentally, physically, and spiritually, then the risk of a spirit invading your own aura and upsetting it is extreme. At that point you would need the intervention of an experienced witch to set you back to normal. My advice on the contacting of spirits: save it as a last resort, when whatever you need cannot be obtained in ANY other fashion, and do not attempt it until you have gained a high measure of control and knowledge and even then proceed with care. A metaphor of what I am trying to convey, is that the realm of the spirits is like a super highway filled with speeding cars and you as a summoner are a pedestrian seeking to stop one of these vehicles and ask the driver for directions. You may be looking for a bicycle, but the chances of you getting hit unawares by a Mack truck (spiritually speaking) are great. A test of your readiness to attempt such a contact, would be to have a friend wake you out of a sound sleep at 2 in the morning and then before you do ANY thing else to recite the ENTIRE invocation and banishing word perfect from memory, along with all the correct visualizations as you do it. If you can do this you are ready, if not study some more. As a final word, I have been studying and practicing Wicca for 20+ years and have never needed to contact a spirit to achieve anything. I have though been called to help other people banish unwanted spirits on several occasions. Now there is an exception to this general rule, there is a lower order of spirits called elementals that are summoned to guard a circle, but these beings are summoned within the bounds of a consecrated circle and are strictly bound by the limits of the circle. Elementals can be summoned for other purposes but they are fairly flighty and not able to perform any major tasks, nor do they carry any great store of knowledge. Most ends that one might desire can be achieved by spell-casting, prayer, or just plain old hard work. And esoteric knowledge can be gained by reading, study, meditation, and divination.
