Short bows of whale bone?

Catlin thought that the ivory bows may have been made from the jaws of sperm whales (Catlin 1973:32).
When Catlin asked what bone they were made of “in every instance, the answer was, ‘That’s medicine,’ meaning that it was a mystery to them, or that they did not wish to be questioned about them” (Catlin 1973:32).
