  • Arab League
    Founded March 22, 1945. Headquarters in Tunis, Tunisia. Promotes co-operation among Arab nations.

  • Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
    Founded August 9, 1967. Promotes economic growth in the region.

  • Commonwealth, The
    Founded April 27, 1949. Secretariat in London, UK. Includes most countries and dependencies formerly in the British Empire, plus a number of fully independent nations.

  • Colombo Plan
    Founded July 1, 1951. Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Aids economic development of southern Asia

  • Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON)
    Founded January 25, 1949. Headquarters in Moscow. Economic organisation of communist-bloc nations. Promotes trade and economic growth. (This organisation may have been disbanded along with the Warsaw Pact in 1991)

  • Council of Europe
    Founded August 3, 1949. Headquarters in Strasbourg, France. Promotes unity, social and economic progress among members. But, unlike the EEC, it does not concern itself with international commerce.

  • European Economic Comunity (EEC or Common Market)
    Founded January 1, 1958. Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Promotes economic unity among member states - most of the nations of Western Europe - and has trade agreements throughout the world.

  • European Free Trade Association (EFTA)
    Founded May 3, 1960. Headquarters in Geneva, Sitzerland. Promotes free trade among members, none of which is a member of the EEC.

  • North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)
    Founded April 4, 1949. Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Guarantees mutual defence among members, all of which are Western-bloc nations.

  • Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
    Founded September 30, 1961. Headquarters in Paris, France. Promotes economic co-operation among members. Members are all Western-bloc nations with the exception of Yugoslavia.

  • Organisation for African Unity (OAU)
    Founded May 25, 1963. Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Promotes unity and development among more than 40 African member states.

  • Organisation of American States (OAS)
    Founded December 31, 1951. Headquarters in Washington, USA. Promotes co-operation and defence among its members, nearly 30 nations in North and South America.

  • Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
    Founded November 14, 1960. Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Aims to control production and pricing of crude oil.

  • United Nations (UN)
    Founded October 24, 1945. Headquarters in New York, USA. In 1984 had 159 members. There are still some states that are not members - including North and South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland, Monaco, Tonga and the Vatican City. Includes International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Health Organisation (WHO). Promotes international co-operation, peace and security.

  • Warsaw Pact
    Founded June 5. 1955. Headquarters in Moscow. Millitary alliance - The communist equivalent of NATO. It was disbanded in 1991, effectively with the break up of the USSR.


Much of the information is still relevant but where figures are quoted, they are dated. Unfortunately, I could not find any information that is more up-to-date.
