Mind Your Back
Back pain is the most common medical complaint in the UK. Research shows that 60 per cent of adults suffer back problems every year and an astonishing 80 per cent of the population will be affected by back pain sometime in their life. Much of the advice given here is simple and obvious:

  • Improve your posture by sitting and standing as straight as possible.

  • Get help when lifting, if you can.

  • Keep your back straight when lifting; bend your knees.

  • Adjust the seat of your car to keep your back upright.

  • Climb rather than reach up.

  • Don't work too long in one position - take breaks.

  • Avoid stretching or prolonged bending of the back when gardening.

  • Don't take huge forkfuls when digging.

  • Exercise, but with proper precautions - get advice.
The above information was supplied by Mark Tittle (via local council magazine, 'Lewisham Life') who has been practicing acupuncture for over 10 years and has specialised in chronic conditions such as back pain.
