Biological Classification
Kingdom
|
All species fall into categories of the ranks indicated by bold type. The other ranks may be omitted in smaller or less complex groups, or additional ranks may be inserted (e.g. superorder, infraorder, etc.). Names of groups ranked above genus are not printed in italics. The name of a species consists of a binomial printed in italics, the genus name with a capital letter followed by the specific name or epithet. Additional names or symbols may indicate e.g. subspecies (Corvus corone cornix, hooded crow), hybrids (Platanus × hispanica, London plane), or varieties (Capsicum annuum var. longum, chilli pepper). Cultivated plants may bear only their genus and cultivar names (Rosa 'Queen Elizabeth'). Classification frequently changes to reflect current scientific understanding of relationships between species, and many species and groups have more than one name in recent use. Examples:
