Five Tips to Get out of Debt
If you are in debt, and in the UK, you can get FREE money advice from your local Citizens' Advice Bureau ( to determine your local branch they are available on www.nacab.org.uk). I'm certain that many countries have a similar organisation to our CAB, so use them as we use the CAB.
The charity has put together these tips to help you if you are having money troubles:

  1. Dont panic and don't ignore the problem. It can seem tempting to stuff bills and threatening letters into a drawer but they won't go away. Avoid borrowing at higher rates to pay off existing debt - it's likely to create more problems in the long run.

  2. Talk to your creditors - don't just stop payments without explaining why. They can sometimes be more understanding than you'd expect.

  3. Work out which debts are priorities - mortgage, rent, council tax, child maintenance, utilities - and pay them first. Don't fall into the trap of paying whoever is shouting loudest first.

  4. Work out a budget to cover all your income and essential outgoings. Offer to pay off debts only at a rate you can afford - it is easy to be panicked into offering more.

  5. Think twice before paying for debt advice - The CAB have outlets all over the country and many years of experience helping with debt problems and negotiating with creditors.
Another place you may get help if your debts involve a bank, is the Independent Banking Advisory Service. They are also available online at www.ibas.co.uk. Countries other than the UK may have a similar oprganisation, so check phone directories etc.
