Ten Good Reasons to Distrust your GP.

Many of Dr Vernon Coleman's readers are unhappy with their GP and write to him stating so. Here are 10 good reasons he gives, why you should distrust your GP:

  1. They will have almost certainly been influenced by drug companies anxious to sell their products.

  2. They may not know who you are - and may confuse you with someone else.

  3. You could be used as a guinea pig in a clinical trial. If you've been given tablets (instead of a prescription) the chances are that your doctor is being paid to test a new drug.

  4. Your GP may be behind the times. Most are out of date within five years of leaving medical school.

  5. Your doctor may be an alcoholic or a drug addict. Few professions turn to alcohol or drugs more often.

  6. They probably have no idea what side effects may be associated with the drug they prescribe.

  7. Your GP will almost certainly want to prescribe a drug - regardless of the fact that other methods of treatment may be safer and more effective.

  8. They may be relying on test results which are wrong - or which they simply don't understand. Errors involving tests and investigations are more common than most patients (and doctors) realise.

  9. It is possible your doctor may be depressed and in no fit condition to make a diagnosis or prescribe treatment. Mental illness is more common among the medical profession than almost any other group.

  10. Treatment decisions may be based on the doctors religious (and in Dr Vernon's case, dietry) beliefs - even though those personal beliefs mean that you do not receive the most appropriate treatment.
The doctor is unlikely to tell you that their decisions are being affected in this way.

Axiompc says:
This sounds so unlike my own GP that those it describes must be QUACKS and should be struck off, certainly the alcoholics and junkies. I've have seen around 15 GP's (members of group practices as well as locums included) over my life so far and can honestly say that none appear to match any of the above criterior for me to have distrusted them. Having said that, I have heard from many acquaintences that they hate and distrust their GP for anything but the simplest of ailments.
