- If your car doesn't have a locking filler cap or flap, buy one. Check the seals - a poor fit could allow fuel to escape.
- The best way to waste fuel is to get lost. Buy a good map and plan your journey before you set off. Consider opting for a satellite navigation system.
- Car makers spend a fortune on wind tunnels to ensure they are as fuel efficient as possible ... and then we bung on a roof rack and ruin everything. Take the roof rack off when you've finished using it.
- Running on half flat tyres is not only dangerous, it is very fuel inefficient. A tyre under-inflated by 30 per cent can increase fuel consumption by four per cent, or 15p per gallon.
- Consider buying a diesel or a dual-fuel car which uses petrol and LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). While diesel is more expensive than petrol, you'll use much less of it. LPG is both cheap and clean. Availability in the UK is still poor though.
- Changing gear earlier will save both fuel and wear and tear on the car.
- Make a note of how much the fuel stations en route are charging for their fuel. If you need some on the return journey, you'll know the cheapest.
- Don't overfill the tank, all you'll wind up doing is waste fuel. It will either spill out of the tank as you reach the brim, or slop out the first time you go round a bend.
- Use the correct blend of fuel. Very few cars need to use Super Unleaded, so why bother?
- Use a bike for local journeys, or walk ... you might even lose some weight.
