These figures are median (averages), that is, 50% of children will be taller and 50% will be smaller than these figures. (Here's a laugh. How about the 50% that are of the average height. lol.) I think the author of this means that around a third will hit these figures with the rest being either taller or shorter.

Dr Mary Rudolf from Leeds Community Health Trust, who led the research said: "It is not just a case of bad diet, it is more due to lack of activity among schoolchildren.
    "They simply don't get enough exercise and spend too much time watching TV and videos and playing computer games."
