Printer

Tips to keep your Printing Costs down:

  • Check the document on screen before you print. Use the Print Preview to check for layout errors.
  • Recycle draft pages. Keep wasted printouts for other drafts or note or drawing paper.
  • Keep a record of your total expenditure for your printer.
  • Use draft mode on your printer. This uses a lot less ink. Save it for those important documents.
  • Shop around for new cartridges. Not only do prices vary from shop to shop, but also you may find a multipack that saves you even more.
  • If you are a heavy user, consider refilling your cartridges.

General

When buying software always check on the box to ensure it will run on your system (Minimum requirements). As an example: - Microsoft Office 97 will not run properly, if at all, on a Windows 3.xx system.

Word
(Most Versions)

If you often need to open more than one Word document when you start a work session, here's an easy way to do it.
Chose File, Open. When the Open dialog box appears, click a file you need, but don't open it just yet. Instead, hold down the Ctrl key and click another file you'd like to open. Holding the Ctrl key down you can click on as many files as you want to open. Now click Open, and all the files will load.

Word
(Most Versions)

Following on from above, when you are working with more than one file, you'll find you have a 'Save All' command if you hold down the Shift key and chose File.
Using this option can save a lot of time especially if you have a large number of named documents. Any unnamed documents that haven't been saved before will prompt you for a name.

Office 97

Want to know all about your system? Simply open one of the Office 97 applications and choose Help, About.... dialog box opens, just click on System Info.
Now you can select any of the items listed in the left pane of the System Info window and find out more than you're ever likely to want to know on the topic.

WINDOWS

The Explorer, folder windows and several applications share a common set of Keyboard shortcuts. Some are more specific but are still used widely enough to warrant inclusion here. Click anywhere in this panel to see a list of them.

DOS and Windows

There is a hidden program on the Windows 95 CD-Rom for creating an emergency boot disk that can restore your system to the way you have configured it. Before running the program, format a floppy, making sure to check the Copy System Files option in the Format dialogue box. Then place the CD-Rom in your drive, browse to the D:\Other\Misc\ERU folder (where d is your CD-Rom drive), and double-click ERU.EXE. Just follow the directions from there. In case of disaster, reboot your system with the ERU-created floppy, and it will automatically restore most of your Windows 95 settings.

If you use the Emergency Recovery Utility found on the Windows 95 to create an emergency boot disk, be aware that some of the configuration files can be huge, making it impossible to fit them all on a floppy (and ERU cannot handle multiple floppies). When ERU shows the files it will back up, click Custom to see the files it will skip. You can choose to skip other files, or alternatively you can make a note of the ones not being copied and back them up manually.
