Reducing Accidents in the Home.
Falls:
  1. Provide adequate lighting for all areas of the house.
  2. Install handrails on stairways and in the bathroom.
  3. Secure firmly, all loose carpets and rugs.
  4. Do not leave toys or other small objects lying around on the floor.
  5. If there are children in the house, install safety bars at the top and/or bottom of stairways.
  6. Do not allow young children to remain alone near open windows.

Burns and Scalds:

  1. Place fire screens around all open fires.
  2. Check regularly that all electrical appliances, socket, plugs and leads are in good repair.
  3. Switch off all electrical appliances when they are not being used.
  4. Keep all inflammable liquids out of the reach of children.
  5. Do not hang clothes or towels over cookers or heaters to dry.
  6. Buy children's clothes, especially night clothes, made of flame-resistant fabric.
  7. When cooking, do not let the pan handles hang over the edge of the cooker.

Poisoning:

  1. Keep all medicines and other potentially dangerous substances and liquids in locked cabinets.
  2. Keep all medicines and tablets in their original containers, clearly labelled.
  3. Check the correct dosage for all medicines and tablets before taking them.
  4. Destroy or return to the Chemist, all unused medicines and tablets.
  5. Check regularly that all the gas appliances are in good repair, and make sure that there is good ventilation when using them.

Suffocation:

  1. Keep all plastic bags inaccessible to children.
  2. Check that all blankets in a baby's crib are secure, and cannot be pulled over the baby's face. Do not allow a young baby to sleep on a soft pillow.
  3. Watch over a baby when he or she is feeding, and take appropriate action in case of choking.
