Doctors Comments and Secrets
|
Here's some food for thought - jotted down from medical journals, TV programmes and conversations I (Dr Vernon) overheard.
|
- Perhaps 95 per cent of the clinical interventions have never been shown to improve health; some are worse than useless.
- Most doctors believe that scientists who conduct unnecessary experiments on animals should face criminal charges.
- Much medical research is shoddy and self-serving.
- Fifty per cent of the things we do in medicine are right and 50 per cent are wrong. The problem is we don't know which is which.
- Patients in Britain are still dying unnecessarily from operations that are organised in a rush by trainee surgeons at night.
- GPs fail to recognise half the causes of major depression they see.
- Three quarters of the country's surgeons still use hernia repair techniques which are regarded as obsolete.
- I used to work for a director of a big drug company. He always maintained that the company didn't want to find a cure for common ailments since they made a fortune from them.
- I'm a doctor and I carry a long list of hospitals to which I would not want myself nor a member of my family to be admitted.
- As a GP I get up to 15 visits a day from representatives of pharmaceutical companies.
- There is no European Community nor UK law which states that drug companies have to test their products on animals.
