Doctors Comments and Secrets
Here's some food for thought - jotted down from medical journals, TV programmes and conversations I (Dr Vernon) overheard.

  • Perhaps 95 per cent of the clinical interventions have never been shown to improve health; some are worse than useless.

  • Most doctors believe that scientists who conduct unnecessary experiments on animals should face criminal charges.

  • Much medical research is shoddy and self-serving.

  • Fifty per cent of the things we do in medicine are right and 50 per cent are wrong. The problem is we don't know which is which.

  • Patients in Britain are still dying unnecessarily from operations that are organised in a rush by trainee surgeons at night.

  • GPs fail to recognise half the causes of major depression they see.

  • Three quarters of the country's surgeons still use hernia repair techniques which are regarded as obsolete.

  • I used to work for a director of a big drug company. He always maintained that the company didn't want to find a cure for common ailments since they made a fortune from them.

  • I'm a doctor and I carry a long list of hospitals to which I would not want myself nor a member of my family to be admitted.

  • As a GP I get up to 15 visits a day from representatives of pharmaceutical companies.

  • There is no European Community nor UK law which states that drug companies have to test their products on animals.
