| Emperors of Persia | |
| The core of the Persian empire was formed from two kingdoms; the original home of the Persians, known as Fars or Parsa (now in SW Iran); and Media (in NW Iran). The empire began when Cyrus the Great conquered his Median overlord in the 6th century BC. Both the Persians and the Medes were Aryans - the word from which Persia gets its modern name, Iran. | |
