Communications that use Symbols or codes

Just a few words to explain briefly, what you see here. The table on the left, shows various means of comunication and also the common phonetic alphabet used in telegraphy and similar communications, to make sure the correct letter is used and heard. Semaphore and Morse are used to send messages over distances. Whilst semaphore is becoming evermore obsolete, Morse is still used in Radio communications. Semaphore needs the sender and receiver to be within visual contact as it's reliant on positions of flags. Morse on the other hand just relies on radio waves and as long as the sender and receiver are within radio range (now normally anywhere in the world or even the moon) communication can take place using combinations of dots and dashes. Braille is the language of bumps of a page that the blind are able to read once they have learned the code. The finger spelling is a form of communication used by and to talk to the deaf and dumb. Again this needs to be learned to actually use it.
The table on the right, contains the international code of flag signals. This is normally used by ships for messages to other ships, ports, lighthouses, etc. They can inform of disease on board, ship is about to set sail amongst many others. As a very common example that even kids can relate to, is the Blue Peter being flown to indicate the ship about to sail. The flags can also get used as distress signals if displayed in certain ways. See the Maritime Distress Signal page to find out how.
