Deep Blues is an awesome work and one of the most important books I've ever read. While I was a casual fan of country and delta blues before reading it, the book focused my attention by powerfully setting forth the primal origins of the Deep Blues. The section on Charlie Patton, the all but commercially ignored founder of this beautiful and emotional music sent me back to the 1920s to the oppressive cotton fields where Patton lived and played...Truly atmospheric. I enjoyed the book so much I wrote a letter to Palmer at Rolling Stone. I highly recommend Deep 
Blues.
