MAY DAY (PEOPLE LIFE OCEAN
WILD)
(ROCK RECORDS) (JUL01)
|
五月天火焰大挑戰
|
Taiwan's most popular band May Day (or Wu Yei
Tian) has released their third brand new offering. This
album may possibly mark their "last" collaboration
together for a long time to come as the guys will soon be
serving their Taiwan national army service.
Once again, all the twelve songs are written and
performed by May Day themselves and four of them are hokkien
tracks. As suggested by the
album's title, a lot of the songs here reflect the group's views
and attitudes towards life. Besides their past
trademark "band" sound, the new album has reportedly
incorporated string instruments to bring a new touch to their
music. Their latest offering is wholly recorded in their
very own studio, a gift from Rock Records in recognition of the
mammoth sales generated from their first two albums. In
fact the album's inner sleeves exhibit photos of how is it like
working and living in their studio.
The first single cum title track
"People Life Ocean Wild" is a mid-tempo band number
with a tinge of folk-rock. The album also contains their
version of the movie theme-song "Migratory Bird" (or
Hou Niao) which was originally sung by Rene Liu Ruo Ying
(released earlier under the movie soundtrack album of the same
name, with all the music helmed by May Day). A note-worthy
mention is that it features guitar playing and vocal support by
the Japanese group Glay.
The album CD comes equipped with Power CD
functions which allow their fans to view exclusive multimedia
privileges via the Internet.

TIGER HUANG (THE VOICE) (SONY MUSIC)
(JUL01)
|
這樣的好聲音豈能放過?
11年來唯一的珍貴現場錄音專輯:THE
VOICE現場演唱全紀錄
|
One of my respected singers Tiger Huang (or
Huang Xiao Hu) has finally released her eighth new album after more than
five years.
"The Voice" is a live album that
is recorded during her performance in two pubs located at Taipei
and Gao Xiong. In fact, for these past five years,
Tiger has been shuttling between Taipei and Gao Xiong as a pub
singer and in the process, she has built up a group of hard-core
fans who are mesmerised by her powerful and throaty voice.
Containing a total of eleven tracks, Tiger
has specially chosen a variety of Mandarin, Hokkien and English
numbers to be included in the album. I'm very happy to say
that the selection includes a live rendition of her two most
popular and (may I say) everlasting hits : the Sky
Wu-composition "Not Just Friends" (or Bu Zhi Shi Peng
You) and "Can't Get A Share Of Your Love" (or Fen Bu
Dao Ni De Ai).
Other tracks include Na Ying's hit
"Conquer" (or Zheng Fu), Mavis Fan Xiao Xuan's "I
Want Us To Be Together" (or Wo Yao Wo Men Zai Yi Qi), Jiang
Hui's Hokkien hit "I Have Loved Before" (or Wo Ai Guo)
and Mariah Carey's "My All".
The album comes with a bonus CD which
contains a brand new track titled "Fire Smoke Live".

LANDY (A LITTLE WILD) (BMG
MUSIC) (JUL01)
|
My first impression when I saw Landy's (or Wen
Lan) latest MTV "Can You Feel It" is "Wow, is
that really Landy?". It seems like she has been
magically transformed from a tomboyish, butch and (may I say)
"auntie" look (evident from her debut album "Sixth
Sense" and her KTV chart-topping duet music video
"Rooftop" or "Wu Ding" with Jacky Wu) to a
vivacious long-hair cool babe. Even one of the Singapore
top radio stations' DJ couldn't recognise her as she introduced
Landy's latest single on-air as being sung by a newcomer from
Taiwan.
Containing ten tracks, the album is mostly
produced (nine songs to be exact) by Michael Lin (or Mai Ke
Lin). This is the same guy who forms part of the R&B
trio group G Force (or Qiang Li Chong Pai) who released their
debut album "Start
From Zero" last year. Therefore it comes as no
surprise that Landy's latest offering is loaded with R&B/soul
beats.
The first single "Can You Feel
It" is an opening dance track written by Michael Lin and
features a rap input by G Force. The third single "L.A.N.D.Y"
is a mid-tempo soul dance track also written by Michael.
The second single "Southern Star"
(note : this song is promoted as the first single in both
Singapore and Malaysia) is a nice R&B ballad written by Fang
Wen Shan together with Landy and composed by hot property Jay
Chou (or Zhou Jie Lun) (gossip note : Taiwan tabloids have been
reporting about Landy and Jay being an item together but both of
them have since stood out and refuted the claims).
Jay also composed two other R&B slow
tracks here : "Tears Know" and "Moved", the
latter being a duet ballad sung with producer Michael Lin.
A note-worthy mention is that Landy did a
Mandarin cover "Hurried Love" of Japanese R&B
female artiste Misia's 2000 hit "Believe".
Coupled the pre-dominantly listenable
numbers with Landy's solid vocals, this album makes a groovy
choice for those who are into Taiwan R&B pop music performed
by a female artiste.
Final note : the first batch of
limited-edition album comes bundled with a 32-page photo
booklet.

ANNIE YEE (CAN'T HIDE) (8866
GROUP WORKS) (JUL01)
|
電子音樂+假面的告白+再也按捺不住的心情
|
After more than one year and currently
spotting a sexy image, Annie Yee (or Yi Neng Jing) is back with
a brand new album under a new label headed by lyricist Adam Hsu
Chang De (the same guy who is responsible for writing the lyrics
of Annie's husband Harlem Yu's latest blockbuster hit
"Tidal Wave" or "Hai Xiao").
Her latest eleven-track offering is touted
as a refreshing change from her past works in that she
experiments with electronic music this time round. A total
of six producers are roped in including, among others, Hong
Kong's Anthony Wong (or Huang Yao Ming), Chen Wei, rock group
Luan Tan's leader A Xiang and the only female producer He Xin
Hui.
Both the first and third singles,
"Can't Hide" and "Flower In The Dark"
respectively, are trance dance numbers while the second single
"Are You My Happiness" is a ballad with lyrics written
by Annie herself. A Cantonese version of "Flower In
The Dark" is also included.
