Personal Comment: Think about each one's contribution to the total lemonade.
Lemonade Stand Enigma
What we know: Two neighborhood children, Katie and her brother Sam, decided to set up a lemonade stand. Katie, with her increased ability and intelligence, made 5 cups of lemonade. Sam made only 3. They had one customer the whole day. A dirty old man, by the name of Lintala. Lintala bought all 8 cups for a total of 80 cents off of the two children. He then poured them back into the large punch bowl they had and insisted they all share. They sat there drinking their lemonade until it was all gone. They all had drunk equal amounts. Lintala gave 80 cents to the kids. Sam insisted that they split the 80 cents with 40 each. Katie, ordered that it be split 50 cents for her and 30 cents for Sam. The old man, Lintala, said, "You are both wrong. I may have dislexia but my math is good. Let me tell you what the split should be."
Enigma: Is old man Lintala crazy or should the split be something else? What should it be? (hint: look at the personal comment).
Solution: Sam should only have 1 dime,
while Katie should have 7 dimes."
What was the "Wise/Crazy" Man's Logic?
Answer: Each of the 3 drank 8/3 of a cup (assuming they all had equal amounts). Sam only had to sacrifice 3 - 8/3 = 1/3
cup. Katie had to sacrifice 5 - 8/3 = 7/3 cups,
seven times as much!
