General HTML: The Basic Building Blocks

Here's where we will explore the basics of HTML. Before you begin your webpage, you might want to think about what you would like your webpage to be about. You can make your webpage into anything you want it to be. Here are just a few ideas about what other folks like you have done with their webpages:

  • You can make a statement to the world about something you feel strongly about.
  • You can advertise a service or product.
  • You can publish your own newsletter or journal.
  • You can post a virtual photo album for all the world to see.
  • You can share technical information or recipes.
  • You can sing the praises of your favorite band, artist, or Hollywood star.
  • You can proudly display your family tree.
  • You can post your resume, or information on your hobbies, clubs, or associations.
  • You can make links to all your friend's pages.
  • You can simply stand up and say "I was here!" on the WWW for the whole world to see.
  • Most importantly, you can have fun!

Creating your first page is a lot easier that you might think! Once you have put in all the Required information, you can put your cursor in between the <BODY> and the </BODY> HTML tags, and just start typing! Everything you type in there will be displayed as text in your web page. It's perfectly okay to start off slow, and add a little at a time. Nobody expects you to create a masterpiece in your first attempt - you shouldn't, either. Just make something simple, then you can go back and embellish it later.

You may find that once you get started, you might decide that you want to make a page on a completely different theme, too. That's perfectly fine - you can create multiple webpages, and have them linked or connected together in many different methods, all on the same website. This entire "HTML Primer" is made up of many different pages, all linked together in the Table of Contents area.

Well, are you about ready to begin? Let's go! Click Here to return to the Table of Contents, and then click on one of the topics listed under "General", to see how to further develop and enhance your web page.
