Deri and TV news boss grilled by police

The news director of Channel One television, Rafik Halabi, and the former
leader of Shas, Aryeh Deri, were questioned by police fraud investigators
for over 10 hours yesterday on suspicion of breach of trust.
Halabi is suspected of providing assistance to the Shas party in the production
of campaign videos in 1992 and 1996, while Deri is being questioned about his
involvement in the appointment of Halabi to head the TV news.
The police investigation was initiated on the recommendation of Attorney
General Elyakim Rubinstein, after he reviewed the findings of an internal
investigation conducted at the Israel Broadcasting Authority
(IBA) by retired police official Zion Sasson. (Sasson is now himself a
suspect in the Nimrodi-Pridan bribery case and is due to be released today.)
Israel's Media Watch has requested that the Attorney General instruct the
IBA that Halabi must suspend himself especially after the fact that news of his investigation
was withheld from the public and not broadcast on the state-sponsored TV
while being broadcast on radio.
Additional complaints were forwarded to the Israel Press Association and
the Association of Israel Journalists by IMW.

דרעי וחלבי נחקרו אמש במשטרה
במשך עשר שעות
רפיק חלבי, מנהל חטיבת החדשות של הערוץ הראשון, נחקר אתמול במשך יותר מעשר שעות במשרדי היחידה לחקירות
הונאה במשטרת בת ים. חלבי חשוד בסיוע להפקת תשדירי התעמולה של ש"ס בבחירות 92 ו96- בתמורה לפעילות של אריה דרעי למען מינויו לתפקיד מנהל חטיבת החדשות בטלוויזיה. גם דרעי נחקר אתמול בפרשה זו.
את החקירה יזם היועץ המשפטי לממשלה, בעקבות תלונה של אגודת 'לדעת', העוקבת אחר רשות השידור והרשות השניה, וכן בשל פניית יו"ר הנהלת רשות השידור, גיל סמסונוב. החשדות מתבססים על דברים שכתב העיתונאי יואל ניר בספרו על דרעי ותנועת ש"ס. אישור לחשדות האלה ניתן מפי עוזרו של דרעי, יהודה אבידן, בראיון שנתן לתכנית 'חופש השידור' בערוץ 7 לפני כחצי שנה. בעבר טען רפיק חלבי כי מדובר ברדיפה פוליטית.
למרות שדרעי וחלבי נחקרו, כאמור, יותר מעשר שעות במשטרה, לא נראו אמש עיתונאים וצלמים הממתינים בפתח בנין היחידה הארצית לחקירות הונאה, ידיעות על החקירה לא שודרו אתמול, וגם בעיתוני היום הוצנע הנושא במיוחד. מנכ"ל 'לדעת' ישראל מידד אומר כי חוסר הדיווח על החקירה במהדורת החדשות של הטלוויזיה מעלה חשד לניגוד אינטרסים בחטיבת החדשות. ארגון 'לדעת' אף פנה היום ליועץ המשפטי לממשלה בתביעה להשעות את חלבי מתפקידו עד תום החקירה. הוא מציין כי גם עופר נמרודי השעה עצמו מעיסוקיו העיתונאיים עד סיום החקירה נגדו.
