Medal of the Month -- July 1999 | |
Navy Distinguished Service Medal - 1st Style |
|
![]() |
The Navy Distinguished Service Medal was
authorized by Congress on 4 February 1919 and made retroactive to 6 April 1917.
Original wording of this Act gave the impression that the DSM was to rank ahead of
the Navy Cross, yet the DSM could not be awarded for heroism...and the Navy Cross could be
awarded for both heroism and distinguished service. This confusion was not cleared
up until 1942, when Public Law 702 was passed restricting the Navy Cross to acts of combat
heroism. This first style Navy Distinguished Service Cross was quickly replaced with the current, more familiar style. However, approximately 100 of the first style medals were awarded...mostly to high-ranking foreign naval officers. Unlike the second style medal, first style Navy DSMs are serial numbered on the rim at the 6 o'clock position. |
