BASRA
OSMANLI VILAYET OF BASRA
In 1875 the three southern Sandjaks of the Vilayet of Baghdad - al-Ahsa (al-Hasa),
Basra and Muntafiq (homeland of the western factions of the powerfull confederation
of the same name) - were detached from the Vilayet of Baghdad to form the Valilik
(name given to a small Vilayet) of Basra (1).
In 1880 the Valilik was abolished and the Sandjaks returned to Baghdad, but in 1884
they were once again detached to form a Vilayet of Basra.
In 1914, on the eve of WWI, the Vilayet was divided into three Sandjaks (2):
- Amara (added in 1887)
- Basra (3)
- Muntafiq
In 1914 British-Indian forces occupoed most of the Vilayet, which now became part
of British Mesopotamia.
(1) Southern Iraq had been conquered by the Osmanli in the early 16th century.
A separate Elayet of Basra existed from the middle of the 16th century to
the end of the 18th century when the region became part of Baghdad.
(2) The Sandjak of al-Ahsa - which had at one time also covered Najd and Qatar
- had been lost to the Wahhabi of Najd in 1913.
(3) Since 1871 this Sandjak also included the Kaza of Kuwait, which was still
formally listed as such in 1912, despite the fact that it was a British
protectorate since 1899.
