SHEIKHDOM OF KUWAIT
Ca 1716 the al-Utub tribe migrated from Qatar to the nothern coastal region founding
the state of Kuwait, headed by the as-Sabah clan, ca 1756. (1)
In 1871 the state recognized the authority of the Osmanli Empire and Kuwait became
a Kaza of the Sandjak Basra in the Vilayet Basra.
Some years later, in 1899, it accepted British protection, becoming subject to the
residency of the Persian Gulf
(1) Some years later another clan, the al-Khalifah, returned to Qatar founding
the state of Bahrain.

From 1899 to the appointment of an official representative in 1904, the defence of
British interests in Kuwait was entrusted to so-called "Native Agents", local Arab
traders, who had a good knowledge of the local culture and of the local economic
and political conditions.
