PRIVATE DANIEL BAILEY

Daniel Bailey was born May 22, 1842. He enlisted at West Union, Ohio, on June 13, 1861, and served through three years of hard marching and fighting as a private in Company D, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Like most of the Adams County volunteers, Bailey was very patriotic. In 1864 he reenlisted with the company for three more years of military service, and transferred with Company D to the 18th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 12. At the Battle of Nashville, December 16, 1865, Bailey had the bad luck to be captured. Upon Bailey's release, the War Department ordered Daniel mustered out of service honorably on June 20, 1865.
With the war now over, Daniel Bailey returned to Adams County, Ohio, where he resided for the rest of his life. The State of Ohio awarded Bailey a war service medal in recognition of his service as a veteran volunteer.

Daniel Bailey died on February 20, 1892, and is interred in the Copas Cemetery, Brush Creek Township, Adams County, Ohio.
