- In Singapore, the drugs abuse start with opium. It was a popular
habit among the early Chinese immigrants.
- The misuse of methaqualone and cannbis (ganja) only
become widespread in the sixties.
- Heroin abuse among
the Singapore youths appeared suddenly in the early
1970s, and spread like wild fire.
- The problem of Glue sniffing (Inhalant
abuser) appeared in the late 1970s and worsens in the
1980s. Most of the inhalant abusers were youths below the
age of 19 as glue sniffing was relatively cheap and
easily accessible.
- Ecstasy is believed to
reach Singapore in late 1995.
The government undertakes the enforcement,
treatment, rehabilitation and supervision while SANA take care of
preventive education and aftercare.
