HORTUS ON-LINE, Version 1998.2
BALIK LOS BANOS
It is homecoming time again and this was a special one for me. It was my
first "original" Loyalty Day in almost eight years! Dugay na
kaayo!
So,with Weng and Kit in tow, we set out to drink in the sights and
sounds of Loyalty Day. We saw HortSoc resident members join the
Department of Horticulture contingent during the traditional parade. In
the Garden Show, incidentally held in the newly refurbished Social
Garden, it was pleasing to see that several alumni like REY PIMENTEL,
SUSAN LAUDE and PIERRE GONAZALES had their very own garden supply
outlets. The resident members deserved
congratulations for the special award in the landscape exhibition.
NEW ALUMNI OFFICERS FOR
1998-2000
During the
homecoming last October 11, 1998, new officers of the Alumni Association
were elected. The new set with Lyle Baconguis as president will serve up
to 2000 and is tasked to spearhead activities for the Society's Silver
Jubilee next year.
The other new officers are:
ENRIQUE BARILE, Vice President Ike, a former HortSoc president, is
currently a marketing executive for the Agricultural Group of Monsanto
Philippines, Inc. He is married to Mary Anne Llamas of SEARCA and his
first child, Dara was born in May of this year.
CRISANTA SUNIO-BUENO, Secretary Leny is with the International Rice
Research Institute and is married PHILIP BUENO.
ANA TUICO, Treasurer Ana is with the Institute of Agroforestry, UPLB
College of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Rice Research Institute and is married to Raul Sta. Cruz.

active alumnae, has a very busy schedule as wife to RICO UMALI and two
growing daughters.
The new officers will meet in early November together with immediate
past alumni president, Dr. CHITO PROTACIO, and the current HortSoc
president,ELINOR DUMALAG to discuss projects for next year. Members are
encouraged to email proposals or suggestions to Lyle, Ike, Ang or Chito.
COMPUTER PROJECT UPDATE
During the Homecoming, outgoing alumni
president and current Department Chairman, Dr. CHITO PROTACIO, gave an
update on the status of the computer project started during last year's
homecoming. Cash collections were approximately Php 6000 excluding $125
(which has grown in value in the past year which was collected from
US-based alumni like JUN and CHINCHIN SAMANIEGO, FRANCES PEREZ, and
VINIA ROXAS. Locally-based HortSoccers like LENY and PHILIP BUENO
donated a motherboard and a keyboard. So far, it seems that the computer
will be operational within the month and we hope to hook-up to an
ASH-based server to provide internet access to the resident members as
soon as the system is completed. Many thanks to the various alumni who
contributed money, equipment, time and effort to ensure the success of
this project. We are still accepting contributions and you may hand it
over to Ana Tuico, Rose Reglos or Chito Protacio.
SENTENARYA
In June, were
happy to open our newspapers and television sets to see REY PIMENTEL's
breeding work on gumamela as their main feature. Launched in time for
the country's Centennial, Rey's new "daughters" are named
after some of the women of the Philippine revolution. These new
varieties are now commercially available.
Another HortSoccer has participated in the centennial celebration in
another way. YEYE RIVERA, taking time out from selling real estate and
golf shares played the part of General Mariano Alvarez in the Repertory
Philippines' musical "MIONG" which reprised at the Aguinaldo
Theatre. The musical is based on the life General Emilio Aguinaldo.
BALITANG HORTSOC
Dr. VIRGINIA
ROXAS has moved on from Texas Tech University to the Dermatology
Department of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

We are happy to welcome back DR. FERNANDO SANCHEZ, JR. who rejoined the

landscape design for the UP Mindanao campus in Davao City.
Also in the Horticulture Department, DR. LEONIDO NARANJA transferred to
the Ornamental Crops Division as assistant professor. Nido was
previously principal of the UP Rural High School and now holds office in
the newly renovated Senior's Social Garden.
In the marrying month of June, two brave HortSoc ladies tied the knot.
SARANY ULEP, set out earlier to try out her landscaping skills in
Bukidnon
but ended up contouring the slopes with pineapple seedlings as an
operations supervisor for Del Monte. She married my next door neighbor
Francis Rizon, a fellow plantation supervisor in Bicol.
JUDITH GUINTO left her job with the Philippine Rural
Reconstruction Movement in Daet, Camarines Norte, to become Mrs. Roberto
Agnoletto amidst the palm trees in a Quezon beach (shades of Guy and
Boyet!). She left early this month to honeymoon in Venice and the velds
of South Africa.

information officer of the European Community-funded Palawan Tropical
Forest Protection Project. Alaric reports that FRANCIA FELIPA BUENO is
his officemate. Alaric's sister, QUEENIE SANTIAGUEL is a medical
representative for Glaxo.
FINALLY...we thank you for your support. Keep those emailed updates
coming. Kindly pass on this e-HORTUS to others who are not on the list
the list keeps changing to accomodate those who have just recently
stepped into the wired age, but do keep us informed!.
Our family has finally settled in Los Banos and the move from Davao has
been a hectic one and it took us almost three months to get adjusted.
Weng and Kit love the open spaces and the fresh air (although the prices
of fruits, vegetables and fish were shocking!). We have chosen a
bungalow in a quiet spot of Faculty Village (11019 Palm Drive to be
exact; the place is
owned by the family of TINA SANTOS-FERRAREN). We hope this will be our
home for the next year or years (depending on what my company has in
store for me. Weng and I would be delighted if you could visit. Our
telephone is (0912)8045556.
