The Events

Joint-Ventures and Design Build
As Architects we are liable for our actions. Thus joint venture relationships can help lighten the burden of responsibility in the design-build scenario. Working with other licensed professionals can often be to our advantage. Also discussed was the topic of when to bring in a Construction Manager.

Setting Up an Office for the 21st Century

This lecture by James Price (shown right) of Price $ervices discussed the importance of computers in the workplace. To summarize: Computers provide a powerful networking source.

A web page is an advertisement, a place to showcase your work. The only disadvantage of the internet is the lack of safety. What you post can be altered and used by anyone, anywhere. Electronic Mail or e-mail is another advantage of a computer. The mail man is no longer the fastest method of transferring your drawings. Working drawings can be sent via modem from the office directly to the site.

Finally Mr. Price spoke of the significance of Backing Up your hard drive. If you don't... YOU SHOULD. This is your hard work. If your files are important to you, make copies and store them someplace other than where you keep your current computer files. Devices for backing up are a tape drive or a Jaz drive.

3D Studio Release 4 Presentation

Used to render final buildings, two Syracuse University members showed the versatility of 3D Studio. Used effectively this program can show how a 2 year project will look in 6 months and help locate construction vehicles during the building process. (Anything to make the plan work!) Something important mentioned was "network rendering." This allows other computers on a network to render frames in an animation to quicken the long processing time for your computer.

Student Caucus

More than 14 academic institutions represented at the 1996 Conference! Were you there? We discussed organizing ourselves, and creating a common mission for Architecture in the broadest sense of the term affecting the community and the world. Perhaps most important was the structuring of communication amongst ourselves and the professional members.
