The Design Process
- Program - Concept This step is the introduction of the problem or program. Free Thought is applied here through
- sketching, model making, and creating the first parti
- ANYTHING CAN BE DONE, SAID, OR THOUGHT AT THIS STAGE - Wether it applies to program or not.
- Preliminary Design
Research, Analysize and Sketch
- program; how has this problem been solved before? check building precedents
- zoning restrictions; what is allowable here.
- characteristics of site; history, commercial/residential, urban/rural, photographs, transportation/circulation...
Sketches should consist of
- analysis drawings;
- Parti(s) - A parti is a basic organizational diagram of a building. Usually in plan, it orders the space amongst public, private, circulation...
Sketch Models and further development of the parti through volumetric drawings.
Select the Most Suitable Parti.
- Design Development
Begin developing All Drawings Needed to Show Parti as a Solution to the Program
Sketches - Proportional and to scale drawings showing relation between site, concept, and program.
- site plan - with building on site
- plans and sections, elevations
- perspectives
- 3D models
- Finalization of Design
Hard Line Drawings
- site plan, plans, elevations, sections
- all other necessary drawings, such as axonometrics, perspectives, construction details
- begin final model
- Presentation

Ink, Render, Finish Model
Draw simple diagrams explaining your project. -These, showing circulation, public/private space, volumetric, and parti, will help clarify the direct relationship you have created between site, concept, and program to your jury.
