Ok, I am admittedly a Manson Fan. I have liked all of his cd's (since he became MM sans Spooky Kids) with the exception of "Portrait of An American Family". It just sounded too sloppy...anyway, Holywood...I had heard most of the songs about 4 weeks in advance of release, thanks to certain file sharing programs (I justified this to myself, knowing I was pre-ordering the cd anyway), so I had some time to listen to them over and over. Like "Mechanical Animals", I didn't like the songs on first listen, however, they grew on me. (and no, not like a fungus as my friend Celene suggested)
While I'm thinking of it (I just put the CD in my cd-rom drive) Nothing/Interscope records:...the automatic command on the cd that takes you to your website when you put it in, and the Autopsy video clip were fairly cool the first time...But JESUS H. FUCKING ROLLERSKATING CHRIST folks, do you realize how annoying that is when you are trying to write a review for your website and your screen goes black and you are wisked away to another site on the browser you are writing said review on?!? Jeez!! It would've been much better if you had embedded the video on the cd and one didn't have to connect to the net to view it. If your programmers are too inexperienced to know how to do that, talk to the guys who released Fuel's first cd, they can fill you in. Surely it was an oversight, surely Manson wouldn't allow the corporate masters to force his fans to go to their website and view the video...that would be so...Capitalistic.
Sorry, had to rant there for a second...where was I? Oh yeah, the music...Where "Animals" was more polished and clean, Holywood has that gritty sound that I loved on Antichrist Superstar. Mr. Manson and company, like usual, are off on another tangent and set of statements on this cd, not that I care. I love the music, and it does make one think when you listen to it in the dark at night. Although I feel a bit funny singing along with "Disposable Teens" as a 28 year old man (being performed by a 30-something) I still do it anyway.
It is easy to see from listening to holywood that the events at Columbine disturbed Manson considerably, and sent him on a binge of songwriting about guns, teens, and violence...his fetish with the Kennedys rears it's head again as well. The songs are dark, and disturbing, but infectious (and no Celene, not infectous like gonorrhea). While listening to "God eat God" this morning, I could almost envision some little prick walking into school one morning, knowing he was about to literally destroy the lives of his peers and their families because he was too much of a pussy to deal with life on life's terms. (not that this is what the song is about, the music just made me think of that..this was early morning and pre-coffee mind you.)The voice effect in some of the songs remind me of Kathrine Hepburn with a live wire shoved up her ass...kind of like an electric warble...it's different...
Ok, I've rambled enough...do I like it? Yes, without a doubt. Will you like it? Fuck, who am I, that Cleo chick on the tarot commercials? Shit man! I know one thing, if you like Brittney Spears (that shitty, no talent, lip synch-ing bitch, whom I still wanna fuck) or bitchy little bands like Limp Bizkit, then you have a couple of strikes against you liking Holywood. I'd like to see Twiggy fuck Fred Durst in the ass...eww, wait, scratch that, I'd like to hear of Twiggy fucking Dursts ass...Of course I think Twiggy is a freak too, but anyway...If you liked Antichrist Superstar and you give Holywood a shot, you'll probably like this one too. It was worth the 18 bucks I paid for it. My personal favorite songs at this point? Hmmm, probably a 3-way tie between God eat God, The Nobodies, and Death Song
PS--to Nothing/Interscope: Make up for the autopsy popup fiasco by releasing a full deck of tarot cards like those on the inner sleeve artwork. They look terrific.
