April 27, 2000 ![]() Mariuska Hamilton was named the Female Athlete of the Year after leading the women’s volleyball squad to a perfect 85-0 record in her two years at the school. Brad Jenks was named Male Athlete of the Year and is Columbia College’s only four-time NAIA All-American. The men’s soccer forward, who attended Rock Bridge High School, was named to the 1999 NAIA All-American second team and was a member of the Cougar team that went 20-5 in 1999 and won the American Midwest Conference Tournament. There were 10 NAIA All-Americans among the five Cougar varsity teams. A total of 31 seniors were given special recognition. During the seniors’ stay at Columbia their teams won 76 percent of their games, came away with 12 conference regular season championships, 12 conference tournament championships and three national championships. HICKMAN BOYS TENNIS: The Kewpies traveled to Jefferson City and defeated the Jays 7-2. In No. 1 singles the Jays’ Damien DeLoyola soundly beat Brett Michalson 6-1, 6-1. But Hickman won the other five singles matches and No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to come away with the win and improve to 9-1. The Kewpies’ top performer was No. 2 singles Jeff Linn who swept Jordan Mahaney 6-0, 6-3. “He was solid out there today,” Hickman coach Bill Croft said. “Jeff kept the ball in play and methodically attacked the net.” In No. 2 singles Matt Schofield avenged an early season loss by defeating the Jays’ John Empema 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. “I’m very pleased with Matt’s performance,” Croft said. “He showed a lot of poise to win in three sets.” Next up for Hickman is the Belleville tournament this Friday and Saturday. ROCK BRIDGE BASEBALL: In Jefferson City the Jays scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Bruins 7-3. Rock Bridge’s Tim Ritter provided most of the his team’s offense by going 2-for-4, hitting two doubles and three RBI. “He drove in all our runs,” Bruin coach Terry Whitney said. “He really came through for us today. Those were two huge two-out base hits. Unfortunately, not much else was going for us.” The Bruins committed three costly errors in that three-run sixth inning for Jefferson City. With the loss the Bruins fall to 8-6 and will next play in the Sells Development Co./Red Weir Classic at Rock Bridge. They will face Harrisonville (Mo.) Friday afternoon. SOCCER HONORS: All-American Missouri soccer player Nikki Thole has been named to the prestigious QEBH Honor Society. The honor society recognizes selected individuals on campus for their accomplishments, which promote the University of Missouri. In 1999 Thole scored a school-record 23 goals and became the first MU All-American soccer player when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America named her to the second team. SHOW-ME STATE GAMES: The largest State Games in the United States, the Show-Me State Games, are scheduled for July 21-23 and July 28-30 in the Columbia area. MISSOURI BASEBALL: On Tuesday night the Tigers (26-17) scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning to come away with a 5-3 win over St. Louis (17-25) in O’Fallon. Catcher Jon Williams provided the game-winning RBI on a triple to left center, scoring Nick Wilfong to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. One play later Williams scored on an RBI single by second baseman Dustin Barnes to make the score 5-3 Tigers. Kurt Evans scored for St. Louis in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single by Adam Shea to tie the score at three and sent the game into extra innings. SLU’s Joe Boyer struck out looking for the game’s final play in the bottom of the 12th. Tiger relief pitcher Ryan Stegall came away with the win. HICKMAN BASEBALL: The Kewpies’ Jamey Jouret came through in the top of the sixth inning with a game-winning RBI single to give Hickman a 3-2 win over Wentzville in O’Fallon. Hickman improved to 10-6 with the win. Hickman’s Justin Kelly (3-1) pitched all seven innings, striking out four, walking two, and allowing six hits and two unearned runs. Next up for the Kewpies is North Kansas City at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Sells Development Co./Red Weir Classic at Hickman. Josh Stadler (3-1) is set to pitch for Hichman.
