Mr. Scott Olson had a wonderful experience
at Skate America!! He met Elena Sokolova herself!! Congratulations on your
successful visiting at Detroit, and I would greatly appreciate your participation!
Here's his exciting story!!
I am a very big fan of Elena and drove 700 miles (1100
Km) each way to see her at Skate America in Detroit. I did see her at the
Worlds in March in Minneapolis since I live there.I did not expect to have
such luck in seeing and meeting Elena!
Her short program on Friday was very good. It was her new routine and she
did it very well, enough to finish in third place. It wasn't perfect but
was very good and she got good marks. I was only a few rows from the ice,
directly across from the judges, so I had a great view of everything. Elena
skates very professionally, with a smile on her face, especially when the
audience cheers her on and she hits her jumps!
The long program on Saturday was terrific. Elena did several triple jumps
and didn't slip at all. It was very near to a perfect routine -- but the
judges only gave her one high mark and the rest about 5.3-5.5. Maria Butyrskaya
(whom I also admire but not as much as Elena) fell down hard, twice, in
her routine and still got high 5.6-5.8 scores. It was not fair! When the
announced Elena's scores, the crowd was upset. They had cheered enthusiastically
when she finished herroutine and we thought she would be the winner of
the gold medal. It was disappointing but we cannot control the judging.
On Sunday the medal winners of ladies, mens, pairs and dance performed
a Gala Exhibition and skated fun routines without being scored. The skaters
had a lot of fun and could do things they don't allow to do in competition.
Elena skated a fantastic and sexy routine. The new photo on of Elena on
Yuri's website with the white shirt and black pants is the one she wore
for the Gala. All I can say is WOW!
I did get to meet her after the Gala and have a photo taken with her. Elena
was very gracious to allow me that photo. My highlight of Skate America
was after the long program. I had a gift for her so she skated to the side
after she was done. As she skated to me she smiled and said "Hi Scott!"
Somehow she knew me and it made me very happy! I still smile now when I
think about that moment! I got a very nice "thank you" from her
and then she went to receive her score.
It was a wonderful weekend and I look forward to the day when I get to
see her in person again. Until then I wish Elena well in her competitions
and to win gold at the 1999 Worlds!
