Johnson-Sorrell begins her second season as the head coach of the women's basketball program. Although Cameron is her first head coaching position, Johnson-Sorrell's experience far outnumbers her years.
In 1993, she was named an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Oklahoma. Her first season in Norman, the Lady Sooners won the National Women's Invitational Tournament in Amarillo, Texas. The next season, OU completed its conference season with an 11-3 conference record, the best in the program's history. That season, Johnson-Sorrell successfully recruited the USA Today's Oklahoma Player of the Year as well as one of the top 10 players in the nation. Her final recruiting class at OU was named one of the top 20 in the nation, including the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year.
This past summer Coach Johnson-Sorrell was the Head Coach of the Christian Outreach Team, which toured Europe and played in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The team also consisted of a few members of the Lady Aggies Basketball team, including Lani Baldwin, Laci Bender, Kelleigh Sanders, and Vendula Mouchova.
A native of Stigler, Okla., Johnson-Sorrell led the Panthers to four straight Class 3A state tournament appearances. She signed with Northeastern State ti play basketball. An NAIA All-American for the Lady Reds, Johnson-Sorrell broke numerous NSU records, including most points in a game (45), highest scoring average (23.9), and most steals in a game (10). While at NSU, she was named to the Oklahoma Intercollegiate All-conference team, the NSU Student Hall of Fame and was the Oklahoma Fellowship of Christian Athlete's Athlete of the Year.
Upon receiving a bachelor's degree in education, Johnson-Sorrell played basketball for a Division I Europe team in Birsfelden, Switzerland. While in Europe, she led her team to an undefeated season by averaging 50 points a contest, including a 65 point outing in one contest. Also, during two summers of college, she toured South America when she played for athletes in Action-Campus Crusade for Christ. She led the team both summers with a 24 point and 8 rebound a contest average.
Johnson-Sorrell has one daughter, Sierra.
Coach Sorrell recently led group of young women to Eastern Europe where they toured the Czech Republic and Ukraine. Through Christian Outreach International, Coach Sorrell and number of her current players were able to play basketball while they took the Gospel to people half-way around the globe.
