Pasties AKA Oggies

1. Pastry Dough

2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
1 Tsp Salt
.75 cup Shortening
5 or 6 tbs Cold Water

Ø Cut shortening into flour and salt
Ø Add water one tablespoon at a time while mixing with a fork
Ø Use hands to press into a firm ball of dough
Ø Roll dough with a rolling pin on a lightly floured surface until thin
Ø Use dough immediately or store in a bag in fridge
Ø Makes about 6 pasties

2. Filling

8oz best stewing steak [cubed]
(My sister says this should be 'skirt'
but I don't think that cut is available in North America)
8oz chopped mixed potatoes and turnip
2oz chopped onions
Milk to glaze

Ø Cut pastry into rounds
Ø Pile filling into centre of each round
Ø Bring the edges together and flute
Ø Brush with the milk

3. Baking

Ø Bake in centre of oven 425ºF for 25 minutes
Ø Lower heat to 350ºF cook for 35 minutes
