Roach Thanks Jim and Mick
Reading's young striker Neville Roach has revealed joint-managers Mick Gooding and Jimmy
Quinn persuaded him not to quit the game.
Roach, 18, has hit 44 goals for the reserves this season and scored on his full debut in the 2-0
against Oldham on Saturday but says he almost gave up last summer.
He said: "I knew I wasn't doing myself justice and couldn't see things improving but then the two
gaffers took me in their office and had a word with me when I really needed it."
New Contract
Reading are set to award young striker Neville Roach a professional contract as a reward for his
outstanding season.
The 18-year-old Royals fan who used to stand on the terraces in the South Bank scored on his full
debut against Oldham at the weekend.
Roach, who has scored 44 goals in all competitions this season,
turned down Nottingham Forest as a schoolboy to stay with his home town club.
Reading Give The Go-Ahead
Reading today received the final go-ahead for their new stadium bringing an end to 100 years of
football at Elm Park.
The 25,000 all-seater stadium will be completed in time for the start of the 1998-99 season at a
cost of £37million.
It will offer double the current capacity of Elm Park which does not meet the requirements of the
Taylor Report.
The stadium will bear the name of chairman John Madejski who is putting £10m of his own money
into the project.
Madejski said: "I believe today marks the greatest happening in Reading for 100 years and the
club is poised to move into the 21st century. Elm Park is a Victorian stadium which is now sadly out of date."
The stadium will be situated half a mile from junction 11 of the M4, close to the Whitley area of
Reading and will be served by a new relief road.
The stadium, approximately two miles from the current ground, will also house a retail park and
the Royal Berkshire conference centre with 2,000 car parking spaces.
Construction will begin in a few weeks time on the project which is being partly funded by
proceeds from the sale of Elm Park.
Royals Denied Managers Split
Reading chairman John Madejski has denied that the club have parted company with joint
managers Mick Gooding and Jimmy Quinn after a message was faxed by mistake.
The club sent out their list of players available on a free transfer at the end of the season, and both
managers were named on it.
Madejski said: "It is strange, I agree, but their is nothing sinister about it. We hope to sign new
contracts with them in the next two weeks."
I Get High On Reading..
I get high on Reading:
The thrills, excitement and roar of the crowd
By two forty-five, Elm Park is alive:
The men in blue and white
Are ready for the fight...
I get high on Reading:
The highs and lows, the ups and downs
Names from the past, names from today:
Gilkesy...Quinny...
Macca...
Archie...Scotty...
Shaka...
The names ring out around the ground...
In wind and hail, cold and rain
Standing on the terraces to watch the game
Without it Saturday afternoons would
never be the same.
