Liverpool dispensed with tradition in appointing Gerard Houllier
as not only their first foreign
coach, but the first to come from outside the club since Bill Shankly.
Prior to his appointment Houllier was France's technical director for the second time.
His influence on French football has been immense, providing a fast track into the national team
for outstanding youngsters and creating a model that became the envy of Europe.
Though after succeeding Michel Platini as national coach he failed to qualify for the 1994
World Cup Finals.
Yet his influence came to be seen as the 1998 World Cup winning team contained many
players that had been given their opportunity by Houllier.
Houllier is familiar with Merseyside since teaching English their in the 1960's, and vice-chairman
Peter Robinson is a close friend. He took the solo control of Liverpool after the resigned of Roy Evans on November 98.
