This was written in January 1998, funny I'd almost forgotten I wrote it.
Amazing how much truth this brings about. Okay so one of the greatest arguments around about professional sports is the money. I keep watching the money being offered and paid to athletes and wonder what does a paycheck look like with that many zeros before the decimal. I don't know and don't suppose I will ever know. I do know that for the most part, those figures aren't realistic for the world at large. I've heard it all, mostly I think that we, the general public are as much to blame as anyone. Somehow, we have allowed professional athletes to believe they are worth all that money. |
So is there a simple answer? No, I don't think so. Do we stop buying breakfast cereal, shoes, clothes, and a variety of other items endorsed by these same athletes? Well we could, but then you have to, stop watching television, reading the newspaper, keep your kids at home and stop attending games. That to is an unrealistic expectation, we don't have enough will power to withstand the temptation or the pressure of what others think. I think that there should be a pay scale, based on the number of years you have played in a particular sport. Gee, what a concept, the more years you play the more money you make. Not recruit all these kids out of school, offer salaries before they have even proven themselves. How often has a young athlete come out of school, played a few games his first year, gotten hurt and sat half the season out, and still received his paycheck? Too often in my opinion. |
On a more positive note, time to talk a bit about the Utah Jazz.
They seem to have another chance at the championship, considering
my Broncos did it, maybe the Jazz can to. They figured out how to
play without Stockton, and with him back they keep winning when it
counts. I like most people didn't know if Malone, could do as good
a job without Stockton, but, the whole team managed to find a way
to win. They are playing more like they really want the title this year.
Consider how they have beat the Chicago Bulls, twice, once at home,
once away, that says quite a bit for them in mine and a lot of other
people's book.
Don't worry if they do win the Title I will have much more to say.
April 24
Well it seems that my Jazz went into the first game with the
wrong attitude. I certainly hope they learned a lesson. They did
not play anywhere near their ability. I was very disappointed in
the way the looked, they appeared to have no life or energy. I believe
they are quite capable of beating Houston, IF they go into
it with an attitude they have to play each game as if it were
their last chance. Let's hope Saturday's game is more impressive.
May 9 Okay, so the Jazz are in serious need of a transfusion, of energy. Hum, I certainly hope that my faith isn't misplaced. The way they are playing, it is like there is no middle ground, either they play really well, or really bad. Are you suppose to congratulate a team for scoring the all time lowest points in a playoff game? May 15 Well here's hoping a few days off haven't made the Jazz lazy. May 16 Good Grief Charlie Brown, I think the Jazz played one of their best games ever. My heart only stopped once when Malone went down. I thought to myself "I knew it was too good to be true," that they could acutally play that way and stay healthy. Most do agree the Malone couldn't do that well without Stockton, and it sure seems that is the case each time the two of them are on the floor. I thought kids were the only ones that needed a security blanket. It was however, good to see that the rest of the team could perform without them on the floor. Here's hoping the rest of the series is as exciting for me as the first game with the Lakers was. May 25th Well I am so very pleased they pulled it off....and did it in style. There is are real possibility of winning the WHOLE thing this time. As for the remark about Malone getting the sympathy vote from the public the way Elway did, I believe that remark, was out of place and I don't think anyone feels sorry for Malone. Okay, btw, I would really like to see the Pacers walup the Bulls, but if they can't, I think it would be safe to say the Jazz will. June 1 Well it looks like a rematch of last year is about to come to Salt Lake City. Although, I believe the Jazz will take the title in 5 games, i also believe they are going to have to work for it. As I have said before, Michael Jordan is about the greatest thing to hit a basketball court ever, I think he just like every other great athelete has to fall sometime, and I think this is the time. As much as people enjoy watching everything Michael does, I'm sure a lot feel the same way I do, "LET SOMEONE ELSE SHINE." Whatever happens, the Jazz will surely make the final rounds of play as exciting as all the playoff games have been and there have certainly been some good ones. June 6 Guess you could call say Malone is playing like a water faucet hot and cold. June 30 Well there is always next year. ------GO JAZZ----!!!!!! |
