DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

I knew a game like this was coming, I just didn't know when. After winning 3 straight at home by an average of 26 points, the Bulldogs proved they were a dominant team at Hinkle Fieldhouse. What they still needed to prove was that they're mentally tough enough to win on the road. They're still looking to prove that after losing in overtime to Eastern Illinois 69-60. Butler had a 7 point lead late in the second half, but coughed it up. We missed several lay-ups at key points in the game. We even had a chance to win with 24 seconds left and the score knotted at 58, but couldn't capitalize. Then we forgot to come out of the huddle in OT and got outscored 11-2. On paper, we outplayed the Panthers in some key categories. We shot a better percentage, and outrebounded them 35-29. But EIU forced us into 18 turnovers and shot 86% from the line to seal our fate. Sophomore Rylan Hainje was the lone bright spot for Butler, scoring 19 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Senior Mike Marshall had 6 points and 8 boards, but was missing for most of the second half due to foul trouble.

There is still plenty of basketball left to be played, but due to our weak schedule our chances of getting an at-large bid are quite slim now. Two losses to teams that, on paper, we should have no problem with, are really going to burn us come March. I have to wonder why we're scheduling these road games. They can only hurt us. If we win, we're supposed to win. If we lose, it kills our power rating even further. We need to bite the bullet, schedule some 2-for-1's with stronger teams, and have some quality games to point at come tourney time.

The Bulldogs look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Muncie to face the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, December 11. Hopefully our win streak over in-state rivals can continue, but it will take a much better road effort than we've put forth thus far. Game time is at 1:00. I'll be making the trip over, and I hope to see a large contingent of Butler fans there.
